Jerusalem
and South Israel Map
I spent a few days in Jerusalem with
Susan and Loryl on our Israel trip in 2007. These photos includes the Jerusalem
shots, and everything south of Jerusalem in Israel that we visited,
including the Dead Sea, Masada, and our drive down to the Jordanian border
including the historical site of Avdat.
I'm indebted to Sue, again, for her
great photos, which I have intermingled with my own.

-
Major
Religious Sites (54 photos) -
Includes photos of the major religious sites of the old city, including
the (Christian) Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the (Jewish) Western Wall
and the (Muslim) Haram esh-Sharif or Dome of the Rock (also known as Mount
Moriah).
-
Old
City (77 photos) - Other
photos of the old city, which is essentially one big souk, or indoor
market.
-
Mount
of Olives (70 photos) -
Outside of the old city, the Mount of Olives has a number of shrines, a
huge barren cemetery, and fantastic views of the old city of Jerusalem.
-
Jerusalem
outside the wall (73 photos) -
This includes the area in which our hotel was located, along Jaffa Road
outside the old city (and the City Hall), and also includes Yad Vashem
(the Holocaust Memorial) and the Israel Museum, at some distance from the
old city.
-
Walking in Modern Jerusalem (77 photos)
- While Loryl and Susan went to
Bethlehem, I remained behind in Jerusalem, the better to explore the
modern city, or the parts outside the old city. I did a lot of walking and
came upon a number of unexpected pleasures, including the neighbourhoods
of Yemin Moshe and Rehavia, a bird sanctuary,
close views of the Knesset and other government buildings, and the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem.

-
Dead Sea (64 photos)
- Photos from our visit to the Dead Sea, including a few shots of the town
of Ein Bokek, and more of the salty water, and bathing in the sea.
-
Masada (93 photos)
- Masada is one of Israel's most interesting historical sites. It was the
last bastion of Jewish fighters against the Roman army. The Roman army
seiged Masada, a citadel at the top of a high plateau near the Dead Sea,
by building a ramp up to the top of the mountain. It took many months to
do so, and when it became clear to the Jews of Masada that the Romans
would seige, they committed suicide en masse.
-
Negev Desert (76 photos)
- We drove down from the Dead Sea to the southern tip of Israel, through
the Negev desert. These photos show that drive, through very dry terrain,
stopping at the historical site of Avdat, and stopping at the looking
point of Mitspe Ramon.
