Gothenburg
Map
Gothenburg was my
second quick-visit on my way from Denmark up to Stockholm.
I fretted about spending only a day here, but in the end I found a day
sufficient. For one thing, the city was riddled with construction, many of
the things I had hoped to see were under wraps and others had their view
blocked by tarps and barriers. That's all good, it is nice that
Gothenburgers are building themselves a finer city, but I will probably
never see the results. I found it just a bit underwhelming.

Most of Gothenburg (119
photos) - This gallery
is all of Gothenburg that is not north of the river. It starts
at the Central Station, makes a bit of a detour to
the east for a cemetery and some tall buildings, then moves west along
the south bank of the Göta älv river. It makes
a big of a zig-zag through the central city, touching on the Gustav
Adolphs Torg which is where the city hall is located, to the cathedral,
along to the market or Saluhallen, south of the moat to a few parks.
Further south, there is a square, the
Götaplatsen, which is surrounded by theatres, the library, a concert
hall, and an art gallery. I spent some time in the gallery. I went over
to the Skansen Kronan (an old fort on a hill) for the views it offered,
then back into town through the Haga neighbourhood.

Gothenburg North of the River (23 photos)
- North of the Göta älv river, there is a former
industrial district that is being redeveloped into an office, innovation
and residential zone. Here is located Sweden's tallest building, the
Karlatornet.
